Keynote Conversation with VICE: What Are They Are Doing Right?
Starting as a scrappy punk ‘zine in Montreal in 1994, VICE is now a billion-dollar-plus global youth media company comprising an international network of digital channels – such as The Creators Project, Noisey and Motherboard – a television production studio, magazine, record label, book-publishing division, and in-house creative services agency.
While the company has received financial backing from WPP and 21st Century Fox, and regularly collaborates with brands on content, it still retains its street-level, in-your-face credibility, making VICE one of the most fascinating media brands of the moment. In this keynote session, Robert Friedman, CEO of Bungalow Media + Entertainment and BCON Expo advisory board member, will lead a conversation with VICE Chief Strategic Officer Spencer Baim, who'll discuss how the brand has evolved into a major media player, its approach to brand partnerships, and its ambitions for the future.

Understanding Audiences Through the DNA of Content
Have you ever wondered why it is easier to search for an Italian restaurant in your neighborhood, compare plane tickets on multiple airlines, or even purchase a car online, than it is to find a film or TV show when, where, and how you want it? Other industries have been utilizing information about their users, products, and services to drive business decisions in far more sophisticated ways than we have historically done so in Hollywood.
Why is that? The key lies in the data about what we are selling. In our case, understanding film, TV, and online video content at its core levels. Once we do, we can deliver far more value to our studio, distributor, and advertiser partners…and most importantly: give our audience an amazing experience. Find out how as we peek behind the curtain during this session with SDI's Xavier Kochhar.

Storytelling in the 21st Century
What do experimentation, rapid prototyping, design thinking and emerging technology have to do with storytelling? Everything. Rapid prototyping can lead to new business models, design thinking can positively affect the collaborative process, and emerging technology offers new platforms on which to deliver narratives. Writer, director and experience designer Lance Weiler is considered one of the leading voices on the topic. In addition to his work on innovative projects such as Pandemic 1.0 and Bear71, WIRED magazine named him “one of 25 people helping to re-invent entertainment and change the face of Hollywood" and he was included in Business Week's list of “18 Who Changed Hollywood.” Join Lance as he discusses, through tangible examples of successful experimentation, what it means to be a storyteller in the 21st Century, and how modern stories for engaged and co-creating audiences require a new approach.

A first look at the agenda
We’ve told you that BCON Expo will showcase the power and results of game-changing, brand-funded content and integrations. You know that our high-level program is designed to demystify the process of selecting the right partners and working productively with them. And we’ve said that BCON Expo will also facilitate connections and business relationships between all the pieces of the branded content puzzle – brands, producers, and traditional and new media companies.
Now, we’d like to tell you what you can expect to see on the agenda at BCON Expo.
SESSIONS:
Off the Record: Who’s the Storyteller?
The Chatham House Rule is a long-standing British custom that affords participants anonymity so that they might speak more candidly about a delicate topic. We'll be applying this rule to a conversation around collaboration. Top-level executives – who’ll be revealed only to attendees of the session – will openly and frankly discuss the challenges in navigating the many goals and interests of various stakeholders when it comes to creating branded content. This unique session is not to be missed!
Intel and Toshiba, in partnership with San Francisco-based agency Pereira & O’Dell, have been incredibly successful in creating innovative and award-winning brand films with The Inside Films,The Beauty Inside and now The Power Inside. Pereira & O’Dell creative director Jason Apaliski and Intel Corporation director of partner marketing Billie Goldman will share insights on how their teams create compelling, social, share-worthy content that viewers couldn’t resist getting involved in.
Driving Forward: How Auto Brands Have Led the Way
The trend of brands using entertainment to tell their story started with BMW Films. Since then, the automotive sector has been at the leading edge of using content. This session will dig deep into how auto brands have led the way in creating a wide array of branded content – ranging from competition series to music videos to interactive films – and have experimented with new distribution platforms to meaningfully connect with audiences.
Sounding Off: Exploring Opportunities in Music
When it comes to reaching Millennials, there’s no better vehicle than music and the convergence of music talent, brands, networks, agencies and producers is happening at a rapid pace. By talking with industry insiders and those experienced in bridging into new territories, we’ll explore where the opportunities lie and how to collaborate with the music industry.
What’s Next: Beyond the Webisode
Webisodes have become tablestakes when it comes to branded content. Whether scripted or unscripted, short-form episodic online films are indispensible for a brand looking to tell its story – either overtly or subtly. But the popularity of webisodes means they’ve become the norm rather than extraordinary. This session takes a look at work that is reframing the definition of what branded content is, how it manifests, and what went into pulling it off.
Luncheon Roundtables*
We’ll be inviting members of our advisory board and other top-level executives to host topical luncheon roundtables. Table hosts will be prepared to discuss a focused, timely topic of their choice and event attendees will have the opportunity to join a table. Meet the host and other interested delegates over lunch and pointed, lively discussion.
*The above session requires sign-up. Details about how to sign up for Luncheon Roundtable session with be announced closer to the event.
